Greetings, fellow explorers.
In the occult, "chaos" refers to a primordial and formless state of existence. It is often associated with the pre-creation phase, where everything is in a state of potentiality and disorder. Chaos is seen as an ongoing, natural process that increases the entropy of a system. Entropy, being a metric to describe the number of ways a set of objects can be arranged.
In this way, chaos is considered a fundamental aspect of the universe, existing alongside order. The interplay between chaos and order is necessary for creation and transformation to occur. Chaos is seen as a force that disrupts established patterns and structures, allowing for new possibilities and growth.
In this, we see similarities to the Right and Left Hand Paths. On the so-called Right Hand Path towards spiritual growth, one follows established principles in order to gradually disintegrate the human ego. This path generally seeks to soothe or deny the forces of chaos, in order to maintain peace. The Right Hand Path understands that chaos is natural and omnipresent, and so it does not see chaos as an enemy. Rather, the Right Hand Path sees the intentional stirring and amplification of chaos as an unnecessary catalyst for spiritual growth. The risks of working with chaos are considered to be greater than the rewards, as there are other, more peaceful ways to grow spiritually that do not involve the invocation of darkness and negativity. Such risks will be described in future articles. For now, readers are encouraged to use their imagination.
On the Left Hand Path, one surrenders to the natural emotion, or energy in motion, pulsing through reality. Emotion, in this way, is seen as chaos. It is raw, unpredictable, and extremely powerful. And yet, it can be channeled and manipulated to produce changes in one's self and one's environment. Practitioners of the Left Hand Path may use a wide range of intense emotions, particularly negative ones such as fear and anger, to break down their human ego, and expose the divinity within.
Please understand that the above definitions of the Right and Left Hand Paths are extremely simplified, and by no means encapsulate full and complete descriptions. They are simply here to help the reader gain a better understanding of chaos. Neither path is truly good or evil, as both energies exist under the domain of the true Creator, and lead to a deeper knowledge of Self. Within all light, there is darkness. And within all darkness, there is light.
Aside from the polarity of positive versus negative, there is another perspective which looks at chaos as a source of potential. We will call it chaos magick, and it is considered neutral. It only becomes positive (Right Hand Path) or negative (Left Hand Path) once the individual practitioner infuses the magick with their own, personal intentions.
In our neutral definition of chaos magick, chaos is not seen as mindless disorder or randomness, but rather as the malleability of reality and the potential for the magician to manipulate energy. Chaos magick practitioners embrace the idea that reality is subjective and can be influenced by individual belief. They focus on chaos as a generator of infinite possibilities, which can be focused and directed through the use of intention and altered states of consciousness.
Indeed, the most open-minded of all practitioners will recognize that our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and intentions have legitimate electromagnetic charges. When such forces radiate from within, they interact with the matrices of reality to produce actual changes in the world. So then, rather than going through life blindly creating wave after wave of karma, chaos magicians use every moment as an opportunity to do magick. The present moment is in a constant state of death and rebirth. When the magician infuses this nucleus of reality with their intention, all of life turns into a vast, ongoing ritual. This forces the magician to become more mindful, intentional, present, and sensitive.
Chaos, the great yin energy, can be harmful. Too much change all at once, or at inappropriate times, can create confusion, anxiety, distress, disorientation, and so on. Recklessness breeds disaster. An immature magician is prone to creating dramatic and extreme changes in reality that may be more catastrophic than beneficial. For these reasons, magicians need to grow from within, and learn to respect magick as a force of change.
Practicing magicians sometimes allow arrogance and the rigidity of their ego to place strict boundaries on what they believe is possible. This mental state renders an individual inflexible when faced with unexpected results, which can also lead to physical and psychological damage. Overall, chaos represents a deeper, more primal aspect of existence that holds potential for transformation and creation. Working with chaos involves developing an intimate relationship with the unknown.
Above all, fellow explorers, if we are to become wise and powerful magicians, we must grow sensitive to change, focus on evolution, and expect the unexpected.

In our universe, we must discover and create our own version of the truth in order to further our personal, spiritual evolution. Do not take these words for gospel. Do not cling to the advice of so-called masters or gurus. In a world of unlimited information, we must consume responsibly, while staying open-minded. If something resonates with your spirit, consider that it may contain something valid, useful, or eye-opening. Try, if you can, to relieve yourself of dogma. In the end, our reality is but a thought in the mind of the Creator, and should not be taken seriously to the point of suffering.
Stay curious,
